Smound
In 1862 Septimus Piesse coined the term ‘smound’ from ‘smell’ and ‘sound’. he was convinced sounds influence the olfactory nerve and vice versa. he also created a ‘gamut of odours’ in which every musical note is connected to an olfactory note in order to create harmonious perfumes. Dr. Caro Verbeek curated the exhibition ‘Base Line – Music Meets Art’ in which visitors can enjoy paintings while listening to music, but, more surprisingly, also encounter three smound stations with accords created by IFF accompanied by the music of Debussy and Ibo Bakker, based on the gamut of odours.
You can visit the exhibit at Kunstmuseum Den Haag until February 14th 2027
